3D scanning helping companies to provide affordable custom-fitted masks

Quebec City, Canada – TechMed 3D, a leading provider of human body measurement software is helping companies with 3D scanning software to create custom COVID-19 masks for frontline workers.

Fabric masks shift around easily and hinder communication when speaking. As for standard fitted respirators, they are bulky and can cause facial bruising after long hours of use. A combination of the shortage of N95 masks and the downside of these types of masks create the need for custom-fitted masks during the pandemic.

Since every face is sized and shaped differently, 3D scanning can help get the best accurate measurements to provide a perfect fitted mask to an individual. This ensures that frontline workers can get the proper equipment to keep them as safe as possible when potentially in contact with the coronavirus.

TechMed’s 3DsizeME App along with a simple iPad attachment is used to do the facial scan to get accurate measurements. The solution can then be used to create an unlimited number of 3D facial images. Each form is then custom designed and 3D printed for each individual.

Some of TechMed’s clients have stepped up in the face of crisis to help combat the current shortage of N95 masks. ActivArmor is producing custom-designed respirators that are high tech, lightweight, comfortable, low-profile, transparent, and reusable, with inexpensive replacement filters.

There is also TOPMED who shifted their production to manufacture medical visors for healthcare staff who are in direct contact with infected people. Usually used for creating prototypes, TOPMED mobilized their 3D printers to produce 24/7 facial supports and then elastics and visors are manually added by staff.

“We are happy to see that our technology is being used to fight against the COVID-19. We need to support our frontline workers in any way possible and I am glad to see that TechMed can help and make a difference,” said Michel Babin, TechMed 3D founder, and CEO.
